saifai | So this is Halloween...

To celebrate, I thought I'd tell y'all a creepy story. I've got plenty of them, as I'm prone to experiences like that. My husband's stories are a bit creepier than my own, so I'll start with one of his.

My husband used to work for Pony Express while they were still in business. His regular route was to run between Boise, Idaho and Pendleton, Oregon. There was this truck stop somewhere between here and there that was a regular fill up and relax spot. On on particular fall evening, he had to make an extra long stop there because of problems with the people at the other end of the route (he would meet a guy in Pendleton who would trade shipments with him).

As he was on his way to Baker City, he made a stop at a regular fuel point for him. I don't remember now, but it was somewhere at a midpoint on his trip. Anyway, he said just outside of Baker City, an ambulence went speeding by him with the lights flashing. He couldn't quite figure out what gave him a weird feeling about it, but he said that it was not a style of van like the ones we use today. He said it was older. At the time he also thought it was strange, as he couldn't quite figure out where they'd be going.

He ended up following it for quite a ways, but eventually found out. As he passed by the truck stop on his way around to the entrance, he saw it parked out in front of a hospital. It was strange that, as all the lights were off at the hospital. He would have thought that if it were an emergency, you would be able to see the lights on. It was completely void of all lights though. There was just the ambulence parked out in the driveway in front. He shook his head at the oddness of it all, and pulled his truck into the fuel pump.

As he's standing there waiting for it to fill though, he goes around the side and looks across the road again. Something just feels off about it all. The lights from the truck stop give off enough light that he can make out a man and a big black dog standing at the back of the ambulence. They're competely still, not a movement at all coming from either the man or the dog. He's a big freaked out by that, for one because he's terrified of dogs, and two because they were just seemingly standing there staring across the road at him.

As his truck finished filling up, he shook himself out of the staring contest and walked inside. As he was standing in line, he met up with one of the mechanics there he would regularly talk to. Joe was a long-time resident of the area, and had worked for the truck stop for at least the past ten years. Mark asked the man about the odd incident of the hospital, wondering if it was a regular occurrence for strange ambulences to pull up out front of a darkened hospital.

It was at that point Joe gave him a strange look and said, "Are you sure? Because that hospital closed down about three years back." Mark didn't quite know what to say to that, so he just shook his head and walked back out after he'd paid for his fuel and travel snacks. As he walks back out to his truck though, he glances back across the street to see if the ambulence is still there. He froze in his tracks at what he saw.

The building windows were boarded up, and they hadn't been before. The driveway where the now missing ambulence had been parked? It was now blocked by roadway barriers, and looked as if that area were being demolished. The weirdest thing was that a street light was now lighting up the entire area. There was nobody around anywhere in that area. The man and his dog were long gone.

He freaked out at the change of scenery and took off. He would look back on his trips through there ever so often to see if it would ever look the same as he'd seen that night, but he never saw it again.
