Sorry I haven't been around more. I feel awful, and I would have wanted to post more. But my migraines has been killing me for the last month or more.

weirdness

Strangest thing happened the other night. I woke up very early in the morning, and I could hear singing. Sometimes I do that when I have a migraine, or if the neighbors are playing loud music. I didn't think much of it until I happen to glance out my window.  In the twilight of the morning I could just make out it black shape outside my window. I could not make out much because I didn't have my glasses on, but it looked to be about the size of a large house cats to me.

If I didn't know better I would say I was visited by a fairy.

Christmas is Coming

I'm all ready for Christmas. I just have to wrap some presents, and bake some things. Today I will be spending time getting the house ready and doing some last minute prep for tomorrow.

I hope that everyone else is ready.

I probably won't get another chance to say this, or more accurately will forget, so I want to tell everyone else to have a very Merry Christmas!

saifai: (TH - Secret Look Twins (unknown))

I've been scouring the net for ideas on seasonal decorations and came across this gem. It's basically a formula for various containers. I've used that method before to recreate pieces on my own, but this is the first I've seen a method outlined to follow.

I think this has always been one of my favorite holidays. No matter what's going on in my life, I can always manage to muster up the energy to do at least a little something.

My first year on my own, a few months shy of my 17th birthday, I didn't have money. Or family for that matter as they'd all moved three states away (about 645 miles away). I pulled out my handmade ornaments (I'd been collecting them for years as a child) and hung them on a big house plant my mother gifted me before she left. Then I had Christmas dinner with the Chinese family that ran the buffet down the street. LOL - Sad, but still fun.

The first year after my mother divorced, we didn't even remember Christmas was coming until the night before. Nobody was in the mood to celebrate, so I took it upon myself to decorate the entire house (even scrounged up a little decorative tree to put on our coffee table). I had already had presents for all of us (bought earlier in the year, thankfully), so I just made us a nice dinner and forced them into a nice holiday weather they liked it or not (they did).

I met a woman at the store the other day while I was finishing up the last of my shopping, and she just had such a bah humbug attitude. I just wanted to stuff her full of Christmas cookies and throw Santa her way. Rather makes me sad not everyone can enjoy my favorite holiday.

Having said that though, no matter what you're celebrating this time of year (even if it's just waking up for yet another new day), I hope you're having a good time. Hug your friends and family, eat a few good treats, and pull up a smile for a few people you don't know.

Happy Holidays everyone!!!

Long time no see! I've gotten out of the habit of updating this like I used to. This past year struggling with my ever worsening migraines has been hell. I can't think straight most days. It's gotten better, meaning I'm not blacking out much anymore. But there are still days my brain won't function right.

I'm spending most of my time at home these days. I'm doing a bit of freelance web and graphic work when I can.

Been taking some time to spring clean my life in the off times. My mother and I are consolidating our storage rooms. We've both got years worth of crap from our failed marriages to sort through. We're finally getting around to selling off what we won't use (seriously, there's like five storage rooms worth of stuff we're facing here).

Got around to sorting through old love letters yesterday. Threw away every last one of them. Feels rather good, you know?

As for Christmas coming around, I'm about ready. I'm going Hermione Granger this year and getting academic worthy presents for almost everyone I know. It's a bit unusual for me, but it seemed right this year. I've just got a few more stocking stuffers to get and then I'm done.

Hope everyone of y'all is having a good holiday season so far. Everyone got their shopping done yet?

I ended up cooking Christmas dinner again this year. We decided to forgo the traditional recipes and do something different. I cooked a roast pork loin, scalloped carrots, spinach salad, fresh french bread (which I actually made myself!!!), and then some chocolate cake.

The Errors
* The dressing recipe was bad. The ingredients would have made one yummy vinaigrette, but unfortunately it only made savory caramel.
* The french bread recipe lied when they said how much time it needed to rise. I didn't look closely enough at the beginning when planning my schedule. It turned out really good (if a bit misshapen).
* The pork roast recipe also lied about how much time it needed to cook. I cooked mine for twice what the recipe called for, but in the end it was super yummy.

Chocolate Overload
It was the chocolate cake that was so delicious. It's really super rich though. It's called Decadent Chocolate Fudge Cake. You cook up a box of devil's food cake. Then you make ganache (melted chocolate, cream, and butter). Chop up the devil's food cake into cubes, then use a mixer to mix it with the ganache. Then ya' freeze it for a bit and frost it with a bit of leftover ganache.

I've got a major chocolate hangover today (which is partially due to some major vertigo, but we're ignoring that). LOL

Speaking of chocolate, this was one of my gifts this year. Cracked me up!

...and now for something completely different!
Sometime later today I'll finally get a chance to start hooking up my new Wii. My friend is so excited for me to get it going so we can network on our games together. LOL We're so easily amused.

On the plus side, my sister was also enthused to find out we had one now so she's been making plans with my mother on what new games and gadgets we can get for it.

Off to forage for lunch, and then lazing around and thinking about potential gamage. Lord, but I do love Holidays. :D

Health
Almost, but not quite, driving by this time. My mom's been sick. Had some test done, didn't react well. Test turned out okay, but found out some long-term health problems she's got. They're not serious, but enough to make her day to day life hell.

I've been sick too. Haven't been able to shake it. I'm tired all the time. I've had a lingering fever. My migraines are worse. I'm starting to get a bit better. I'm going from sleeping 12 hours or more to 9 or so now.

Christmas
My mother and I are making all our gifts this year, which is why we're on the way out the door. We're heading out to the craft and beading store to pick up supplies. We're doing candles, jewelry, craft totes, gift baskets, book bags and jeweled bookmarks. Things like that. We've got a ton of baking to do now too.

That's about all for now. How's everyone else getting ready for the holidays?

Got me a new driver.  I think I mentioned that I quit my route.  Had an argument with the driver they'd given the route to and just wouldn't take it.

Anyway, they took the route away from her and gave it back to me with a new driver.  She's just great so far.  We have a lot of fun together.

She's a former marine.  She also reminds me a lot of the driver I had last year.  She moved to Idaho because of her girlfriend, ended up staying after her girlfriend cheated on her.  Still lives with said girlfriend along with the new girlfriend of the ex.

Bonus?  She laughs when she's stressed.  I can live with that.  I do much of the same.

Today was an early out for the elementary students.  We had lunch together at the IHOP.  It's amazing what a little neon green shirt (courtesy of the new driver) will do to take care of my little invisi-Saifai problem with the servers there.  Not sure if I've ever mentioned it.  I've got an invisibility curse with both Denny's and IHOP.  It's like once I enter the restaurant and sit down, they promptly forget I exist.

I'll be checking in now and then over the next week.  Spring break started for me today.  I got an entire week of freedom!

P.S.  Anyone got an unbiased (or at least biased on the POV of Nick or James) of the recent Buffy reunion con?  I've read a couple, and both were clearly humongo fans of SMG.  Still haven't gotten over her since Season 6 Buffy stomped all over my Spike (why yes, I can hold a grudge.  why do you ask?).  I've read a few comments on things Nick Brendon said and laughed quite a bit, especially over that Susan Lucci comment (ouch, but damn funny).  I'm curious to know what more banter went on between James Marsters, Nick Brendon, and maybe Seth Green.  Any links with transcripts of the infamous Q & A are muchly appreciated.

P.P.S.  I got me some jury duty.  I'm making plans of escape.  They gave me short notice too.  Hopefully they won't call me.  I sooo can't afford to be called to duty.  My employer doesn't pay for the time I'm gone, and you know I'll make just enough for a Happy Meal from the state.  Joy.

I participated in [livejournal.com profile] lazuli_kat's Spander Christmas Cracker, as I mentioned before.  My day was the 23rd, but I wanted to give the folks at Excessant first grabs.  It's Christmas though, and I present it to the rest of you.

Yes, folks, I wrote fic.  Please, hold the gasps of shock on this most momentous of occasions.  LOL  Follow the link to it's home at Laz's site to read more.

Sunday Funnies
Since it's Sunday and all, here's a funny story to cheer up your day about a Pastor and a kitten.

The Pastor's Kitten )

Christmas Muses
In other news, my muses have made a surprise visit and I'm writing a Christmas Cracker story for  [livejournal.com profile] lazuli_kat's 12 10 days of Spander Christmas.  My day is the 23rd, so I'll post links to it when I'm done.

Health News
That whole thing with the allergic reaction to my meds continued when I discovered the pain I had from the event were actually muscle spasms.  All my muscles from the waist up to the top of my head was sore and sensitive for the better part of a week and a half.  I was stuck eating soft foods for about three or four days because my jaw and throat muscles were so stiff.  I'm much better now, and only vague sensitivity to those areas remains.

Let the festivities begin!!!
I went to the women's Christmas Dinner at church the other night and came back filled with Christmas Spirt.  Damnit.  So, I'm wrapping presents (damn you Fuzzywigs for not including the tag to the Webkinz I bought my nephew and making me go back to beg for it today), baking (back to the store to get the spray oil that doesn't include garlic... "Why do I keep smelling garlic on the banana bread?"), and decorating a bit (still looking for the baby jesus for my nativity).

Bah Humbug
I told my mother just now what I was writing.  She seemed to think that nobody would believe me that I had Christmas Spirit if I was snarking the whole time about what went wrong so far.  LOL - she just may have a point there.

Hope everyone's holidays are going well so far.  *big smooshy hugs all around*

There's a new toy out called the Amazon Kindle.  Dood.  I so want one.  Just think of all fics you could load on this thing!

They say that you can put 200 books or whatever on it.  You can also email word documents and photo files to it.  *smiles an evil grin and rubs hands in glee*

Nano: Imminent Failure
In other news, I'm not going to meet my goal for the Nano.  On the bright side, I've got a decent story fleshed out.  I'll be continuing on with it after November.

Turkey Day Food Adventures
Thanksgiving with my Mom was a quiet affair.  It was just the two of us.  We had all the fixings, just in smaller amounts.  We made Turkey/Chicken Gumbo Yaya (turkey broth with chicken bits so we could save the turkey for sandwiches) and plenty of sandwiches.  Speaking of which, I had my first hot turkey sandwich ever (open faced sandwich, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy).

I made the Brandy Pecan Pie again.  It's become a favorite.  Last year when I made it there was too much booze in it.  I didn't cut down on the Brandy, but I did use half the amount of Bourbon Vanilla in it.  Probably could have done without using the Bourbon Vanilla all together, but it's all I had.  I'll have to post a recipe for it soon.  It was really good, and super easy to make.  Came out nice and chewy rather than the hard and crispy versions I'm used to having.

Wheeeeee!
I need to catch up with everyone here.  Have been AWOL for a month or so.  I've got a ton of recipes and fic recs to share.  Hopefully I can get those up in the next week or so.

Hope everyone had good holidays.  *hugs all around*

My Gifts
First things first, I got a few cool gifts for Christmas. Hubby gave me a guitar. Woo Hoo! It came with an instructional video, and he also setup a few lessons with a friend of his who's a classical guitarist. Always wanted to learn to play... Ooh, and my mother gave me three new Xbox games: Spliter Cell, Spider Man, and Spy Hunter.

Learning Guitar
My fingertips hurt. I've been practicing the guitar every day since Christmas until the notes start to sound funny because I'm not pressing hard enough on the strings. I'm really excited though. I'm getting a little ahead of myself and have my eye on a few songs I'd like to learn. All in good time...

Everything Else
Despite everything that's been going on, it was a good Christmas. I made cinnamon rolls for breakfast, from scratch (weird, I know). I talked to my Dad that morning, as he called to thank me for the gift I sent him. It was strange that he wasn't there, but good at the same time. He never was much of a Christmas type person. More of a Bah Humbug guy. I made a horseradish roast for dinner, with stuffing, crescent rolls, and fruit salad. Mom was just so happy that day, which was nice for a change. She got some nice gifts, and didn't have to lift a finger to bake or decorate.

At the moment I'm taking it easy. My headaches came back briefly, and brought friends. I've been feeling a bit dizzy the past couple days. More on everything to come...
