Cats are strange.

My cat has always been very mellow. Truly. For the longest time after we brought him home after my Grandmother died, we thought he was declawed. It turned out he wasn't, he just never felt the need to use the claws unless the other cats pissed him off.
In a side note here, I call him my cat only recently. He actually isn't mine, but he adopted me. I've always been told that cats will choose their owners, but never experienced it until this cat came along. So, in reality I'm his pet human. *gr*
Anyway, One of the things I've always been adamant about since my last cat died, is that no cats are allowed in my room. I'm allergic to them and can't stand to have them in the room with me while I'm sleeping. However, since we've moved into our new place our bedroom is downstairs. It gets stuffy in there, so we leave the room open most of the time. We've managed to keep the cats out up to this point by putting up a gate in the doorway. Not that they couldn't jump over it, but they've always accepted that they didn't go in there.
Things change though, as they always do with cats. Usually if I'm still asleep in the morning when he gets up, he comes downstairs to wait for me. If I'm not up when he thinks I should be, he starts sqeaking at me (which is an odd sound to hear coming from an 18 pound cat). He's been known to waltz in the room if the gate is accidently left open and check on me. He never jumps on the bed, he just comes around the side to see if there's a foot hanging off the edge. If there is, that means his pet human is still asleep and he should continue his vigil outside the door.
No sooner than hubby leaves for his hunting trip does the cat decide that the gate clearly isn't there for him. Since I stayed up so late last night (I finally collapsed in bed at around 5am after re-reading
txrabbit's "The Gift" straight through), I didn't get up until late.
Or at least I wouldn't have if the squeaking monster hadn't woke me up at just after 10am. At about 10:25 he'd finally had enough and jumped over the gate. I was too exhausted to notice him landing on my feet as he made it up to our bed. No, it was the squeaking in my ear that finally roused me.
So, I gave him his due attention and kicked him out. I had breakfast, did some work on the computer (which I should note here that I usually work on mine which is in the living room, but hubby keeps his in our bedroom), then went back to bed for a nap. Not five minutes go by before he's decided that I'm ignoring him again and he jumps the gate again.
*sigh* At the moment, he's sitting behind me on the bed. He stopped sqeaking at me finally, but he won't leave.
I've come to realize that if an 18 pound cat wants in my room, there really isn't anything that can stop him.
