Strange habits...
May. 12th, 2011 01:55 pmDoes anyone have strange habits? Those things that you just do almost unconsciously. Like when I come in my front door, I automatically close and lock it (to the frustration of my mother, heaven forbid she comes in the door after me LOL).
I've got one that I don't even realize I'm doing it until I'm half done with it. It started because of an incident when I was 8 years old. I lived in Colorado at the time, and we had an awful flood. It was a flash flood, but the storms just kept coming. We lived at the base of Pikes Peak, so we were right in line for the biggest flooding. So in the middle of the night, Dad told us to grab what we could carry and hauled us out to the truck so we could head to higher ground. We spent a day parked in our car in an old drive-in theater, then a week or so in a hotel while the flood waters receded and damages could be repaired.
Ever since then, I can't help but want to be prepared for emergencies. I'll keep supplies of food hidden in my closet. I always have supplies in my trunk, and even in the back seat of my car. But the other night topped the cake. I had the windows open and smelled the neighbor burning wood in his stove. There was that instant moment where I thought of a fire in the house (despite knowing what the smell was). Within a minute I'd got my toiletries and a few changes of clothes in a bag and was heading for my backup computer data before I even realized what I was doing.
I know. I'm weird sometimes. We've already established this. I'm curious though, what sort of strange habits do you all have? Any weird quirks you've never been able to shake yourself of?

Date: 2011-05-12 08:05 pm (UTC)1) I can't go anywhere without a book. Literally. Even going from my bedroom to the kitchen, I'll pick up a book to take with me. Most of the time, I won't even realize I did it until I set it down. And it doesn't really matter what book it is, either, as long as I have a book in my hand.
2) If my car's gas tank gets below half, I freak out. Massively.
3) Every room in my house has a fan in it, and the first thing I do upon entering my house is turn on every fan. If I go into a room and the fan is off, I have to turn it on.
4) I share your locked door syndrome. I always lock every door behind me. Well, in my own home...it doesn't seem to affect me when I'm in other people's homes.

Date: 2011-05-13 12:12 am (UTC)At night when I hear a noise, I jump out of bed. If it's the kids, I assume somebody can't breathe (lots of croup and asthma in our house), even if it's nothing. If it's not, I go around the house with my (ornamental Samurai) sword looking for bad guys. Sometimes I don't get much sleep.

Date: 2011-05-13 09:23 pm (UTC)LOL - I do the same with a butcher knife. I've got decorative knives too, but harder to explain to cops if I actually did do something to a burgler. :D My mom keeps an unloaded gun in her bedroom for the same purpose. We don't have bullets for it, and not even sure we would know how to use it if we did. But we figure it'd hurt like hell if you threw it at someone's head.

Date: 2011-05-14 01:57 pm (UTC)This website is really interesting:
nononsenseselfdefense.com
It was a real eye-opener to realize that legally you aren't even supposed to fight against somebody in your home. :( Equal response to equal force, or something like that. I found the man's comments about how to deal with gangs, etc. more useful than the usual self-defense sites that claim you can psyche out an attacker--which would HAVE to require a different approach for different personalities.

Date: 2011-05-17 07:23 pm (UTC)Daniel does indeed do crazy and/or evil very well. Incidentally, so does Jack.
