The car just broke down. Hubby was on his way back to work from lunch and it broke down on an off-ramp just off the freeway. Keep in mind here that he'd said that, "The car just shut off." No mention of any clanging.
How did it happen? The timing belt broke. It snapped back and knocked the water pump (the one we just replaced last month) off the block. The flying debris caught the tensioner pulley and snapped it off, pulling into the main part of the engine. All this resulted in a chipped block. It's not cracked or anything, but it's definitely weak.
Cost to repair the damages? $3,000. Cost for a new engine? $3,000. It's actually cheaper by just a bit to do the new engine bit, since we don't have to get a new new engine. We can get a slightly used one and swap some of our still good parts out for it.
It's a good car though, so we're gonna do it. Just no telling how long it'll take us to get around to doing it.
